Erik ten Hag hints at quitting football management, likely to switch career

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed he might not take another managerial job in his career after being sacked by the Premier League side last year.

Ten Hag arrived at Manchester United from Ajax in 2022 with lots of expectations, however, he failed to deliver, enduring a difficult two-year spell. The Dutchman was consistently linked with the sack after overseeing a set of poor performances and results.

Though Ten Hag managed to win two domestic trophies – the Carabao Cup followed by the FA Cup the following season, he was sacked in October.

His departure came after leading the team to their worst ever start to a Premier League season, leaving the Red Devils 14th in the table following a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

Ten Hag is yet to get a role since his United departure but has suggested he could switch his attentions to the business world and help his brothers Michel and Rico run their finance company.

“There are so many other things I could do,’ Ten Hag said on the SEG Stories podcast. “Maybe in football, in a new position as a manager. That’s an option. And maybe something completely different.

“I’ve been working with my brothers lately. We have our own company. Or rather: they have their own company. But we also run a company together with our father. That’s also something I love to do I can now give that more attention and it’s also a lot of fun.”

The Ten Hag family are among the richest in Holland after their father Hennie set up a successful real estate company in 1967. In the interview, Ten Hag also vented his frustration over feeling like his players could not take criticism well at United.

He added: “This generation, for example, generally has a hard time dealing with criticism.

“Criticism really affects them. The generation I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct. If I did that with my players, it would demotivate them.”

Ruben Amorim replaced Ten Hag at Manchester United but the Portuguese has also failed to hit the ground running.
