Lamine Yamal to follow Lionel Messi’s footsteps as Barca hands him new role

Lamine Yamal will follow the footsteps of Lionel Messi at Barcelona with the Spanish international set to take up a new role at the club next season.

Yamal has become the biggest youngster in football with his impact felt at club and international level. At just 17 years, Yamal has gone on to break and set new records, he has also been able to win trophies with his club and country.

The Spain international will now wear the legendary No. 10 shirt once worn by Lionel Messi as he takes centre stage for the 2025-26 season.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have decided to hand the iconic No.10 shirt to Yamal ahead of the 2025-26 season. The move comes after Ansu Fati’s loan move to Monaco, officially vacating the number.

While Fati had worn the shirt since Messi’s departure, Barcelona froze the number during his last loan spell.

Unlike every other jersey number, the No.10 shirt at Barca isn’t just a number it’s a symbol. From Rivaldo and Ronaldinho to Messi, it represents creativity, genius, and leadership. The club’s decision to pass it on to Yamal reflects their belief in his long-term potential and global appeal. With the his influence growing both on and off the pitch.

Barcelona are set to unveil their home jersey for the new season on the 2nd of July, however, official announcement of Yamal’s new number may come after the unveiling.

The Spanish club will hold a special event for Yamal’s 18th birthday in July and will announce him as the new No. 10 when that takes place, although, as his birthday falls on a holiday, it is not yet known when it will go ahead.

Yamal is currently on holiday and has been spotted with former Barcelona winger Neymar. However, he will join Hansi Flick’s side for pre-season training in a couple of weeks.
