Manchester City defeated Manchester United to clinch the Community Shield in a tense penalty shoot-out.

Both teams probed for an opener during the first half, with James McAtee hitting the post for the Citizens before Amad Diallo spearheaded a United resurgence down the other end.

The Red Devils remained on top after the break and took the lead through a piece of individual brilliance from Alejandro Garnacho with eight minutes to play. However, Bernardo Silva scored late on to bring both sides level. The game launched straight into penalties, where Pep Guardiola’s team triumphed.

A horror moment for United’s veteran Jonny Evans gifted the Community Shield to City after a penalty shoot-out. Andre Onana saved from Silva early in the shoot-out but Jadon Sancho, back for United following his bust-up with Erik Ten Hag, saw his kept out by Ederson.

Evans lifted his spot-kick over the crossbar before Manuel Akanji tucked in the winning penalty as Pep Guardiola’s side secured the first silverware of the season.

City head into the 2024/25 campaign with silverware in their locker as they aim to make it five Premier League titles in a row. Meanwhile, United will be eager to compete with City having lose out last season.
