Under Consideration! Morocco tipped to host La Liga matches in the future

La Liga president Javier Tebas has revealed that playing some league matches in Morocco is under consideration.

Tebas made this known during an exclusive interview with the Moroccan News Agency, he said, “It is possible that some La Liga matches could be held in Morocco, specifically in Casablanca.”

He explained that the idea is driven by the large number of La Liga supporters in the North African nation and the ease of travel.

He added, “We see tremendous passion for La Liga right across the region, from Iraq to Morocco.”

He emphasised the deep historical links between the two nations, stating, “There have always been strong ties and great affinity between Spain and Morocco in sport, especially football.”

La Liga in the past few months have not hidden their intentions of playing some domestic games on neutral ground in a different country.

In 2025, the game between Barcelona and Villarreal was meant to kickstart the project as LaLiga announced it would stage its first-ever regular-season match outside of Spain.

Both team were scheduled to play at the Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 20, but the game was eventually called off.

Senior players such as Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois spoke out against the game, with Courtois saying it would “totally affect the integrity of the competition” by unbalancing the format of every team playing each other once at home and once away over the course of the season.

It’s now left to be seen if a La Liga match in Morocco will be allowed as the League hope to expand its fan base.
