Premier League confirm new VAR change for 2024/25 football season

As the 2023/24 football season moves to it’s later end, Premier League have announced a new changes to the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has continued to headline matches this season with some decisions raising eyebrows.
Some managers have also been vocal about the usage of VAR, highlighting that consistency is important when it comes to its decision making.
Premier League has now confirmed that clubs have unanimously agreed to a significant change in how offside decisions are made, and usage of the technology.
According to the Premier League, semi-automated technology will be introduced next season.This development was given the green light at the latest Premier League shareholders’ meeting on Friday morning.
The new system is expected to be operational after the Autumn international break, though an exact date is yet to be confirmed.
The Premier League statement reads: “The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.”
The semi-automated technology has already been used in the Champions League over the past 12 months. It was also used at the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
