Ruben Amorim sacked as Man Utd manager after 14-months reign
Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim after his extraordinary rant following the draw at Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.
Amorim sent a blunt message to the United board in his post-match press conference and has been dismissed the following day.
According to The Athletic, United have taken immediate action, sacking Amorim after 14 months in charge. Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is currently the under-18s coach, is expected to take charge of the team for their Premier League game against Burnley on Wednesday night.
The decision has been made by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. The report states that United could leave Fletcher in charge as interim manager until the end of the season, before appointing a full-time replacement.
Asked if he had confidence from the United board on Sunday, Amorim went on a remarkable rant. “Guys, to stop with that, and I noticed that you received selective information about everything. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear,” he said.

“I know that my name is not Tuchel, is not Conte, is not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decided to change. That was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until other guy is coming here to replace me.
“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on.
“That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticises of everything, we need to change the club. No, no guys, I would say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. Every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. Thank you, guys.”
Amorim was appointed to replace Erik ten Hag as United manager in November 2024.
The Portuguese oversaw a miserable debut campaign with United finishing a lowly 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Man United currently sits sixth in the Premier League following back-to-back 1-1 draws against Wolves and Leeds. Amorim leaves having won just 24 of his 63 matches in charge after arriving from Sporting Lisbon 14 months ago.
