Thunder on Top: SGA’s 42-Point Masterpiece

PHOENIX — If you’re going to call the reigning league MVP “frail,” you’d better be prepared for the fallout. Following Dillon Brooks’ post-Game 2 comments suggesting that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander relied too heavily on the whistle, the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar responded on Saturday night with one of the most brutally efficient masterpieces in NBA playoff history.

With a 121–109 victory at the Footprint Center, the Thunder have taken a commanding 3–0 series lead over the Phoenix Suns. Oklahoma City is officially sitting on top of the Western Conference first round, and they are looking every bit like the defending champions they are.

Dismantling the Suns: The 83.3% Shooting Clinic

In Game 3, defying the narrative that his scoring is inflated by free throws, Shai put on an absolute clinic from the field.

  • The Stat Line: 42 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds.

  • Historical Efficiency: He shot a mind-bending 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the floor, consistently hitting contested fallaways and tight mid-rangers that left the Phoenix crowd in stunned silence. According to advanced metrics, it was the second-highest field goal percentage ever recorded in a 40-point playoff game.

  • The Response: Brooks actually played a great game for the Suns, dropping 33 points. But his defense could do nothing to stop the relentless, smooth, and composed onslaught of the man he tried to rattle.

“Mr. Clutch” Solidifies His MVP Case

This Game 3 performance comes just days after Gilgeous-Alexander was officially awarded the 2025-26 Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year trophy in a landslide. Receiving 96 out of a possible 100 first-place votes, Shai’s grip on the Jerry West Trophy was never in doubt.

“To get this award, you have to help your team win games late, and what I’m about more than anything is winning games,” Shai said after receiving the honor.

During the regular season, he led the entire NBA with 175 total clutch points. On Saturday night, when the Suns attempted to make a late rally in the fourth, it was his difficult 19-foot fadeaway that deflated the arena and iced the contest.

 Weathering the Storm

What makes the Thunder’s dominant 3–0 lead even more impressive is that they are doing it while shorthanded.

  • Jalen Williams Out: OKC’s high-scoring guard missed Game 3 with a left hamstring injury suffered in Game 2.

  • The Next Man Up: Rookie Ajay Mitchell got the start in his place. While Mitchell struggled from the field (5-of-20), his defense and effort helped bridge the gap.

  • Booker’s Scare: The Suns had their own injury scare when Devin Booker rolled his left ankle in the third quarter. He dramatically returned to the floor to keep Phoenix alive, finishing with 16 points, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the Thunder’s momentum.
