Tottenham enter race to sign Man Utd target Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as Roberto De Zerbi pushes for more reinforcement.

De Zerbi helped Tottenham escape relegation last season and the Italian tactician is now eager to setup a team worthy of competing for titles and not relegation battle.

Tottenham have been busy in the summer transfer window, bringing in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers, while also pursuing Savinho, Jan Paul van Hecke and Joao Palhinha.

The club have now set their sight on Tonali who has also been linked with Manchester United.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have entered the race for the Newcastle midfielder. Tonali has attracted interest from several top Premier League clubs, while Newcastle’s failure to qualify for Europe has fuelled speculation over his future.

Romano revealed Tottenham’s interest in a post on X, claiming De Zerbi sees Tonali as a key addition to his midfield.

He wrote: “EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham have entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali! De Zerbi wants Tonali as new star for the midfield, ideal to step up #THFC level. Spurs ready to face Man City and Arsenal in the race for Tonali for new ambitious project to prove their intentions.”

Romano also clarified Manchester United’s position on the player, suggesting the Old Trafford club are no longer actively pursuing a deal.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “Manchester United are not going for Sandro Tonali at this stage. The intention of Manchester United is not to proceed. Manchester United has been interested in Tonali for some time, and he’s been on Manchester United’s shortlist, but now Manchester United believe that the player is too expensive.”

With Man United reportedly not willing to pursue Tonali, Tottenham will have an higher chances of convincing him, although the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring the situation.

Tonali is currently enjoying his holiday as Italy failed to qualify for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
