Tunisia sack coach Lamouchi after 5-1 World Cup defeat

Tunisia have sacked coach Sabri Lamouchi after last night’s 5-1 thrashing by Sweden at the World Cup.

Lamouchi’s side were swept aside by the Swedes in Monterrey, collapsing in the second half to get their Group F campaign off to a dismal start.

Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres were in fine form as Sweden were unstoppable. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari scored the pick of the goals with two stunning long-range strikes – on either side of the game in the sixth and 96th minutes.

That defeat spelt the end for Lamouchi, who was only appointed in January but was already under scrutiny following a 5-0 defeat by Belgium in a warm-up game for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi,” the Tunisian Football Federation posted in a statement on Instagram. “Plans are under way ‌to appoint ‌Mondher Kebaier as the national team ‌coach [on an interim basis].”

Kebaier was previously Tunisia coach between August 2019 and January 2022. He is expected to be in charge for Saturday’s game with Japan.
