Premier League explain why Everton penalty was overturned in Man Utd draw

Manchester United and Everton played out a 2-2 draw at Godisson Park on Saturday afternoon and the match saw another VAR controversy.
Everton were left furious after VAR intervened to overturn a penalty in stoppage time. Leading two nil in the first half, United came back stronger in the second half thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
However, things changed when referee Andy Madley awarded Everton a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time.
Ashley Young went to ground under duress from Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, both of whom looked to have pulled Young’s shirt before he hit the turf. However, after being asked to check the monitor, Madley overturned his decision.
With Everton fans still not pleased with the decision, Premier League have now explained why.
“VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review,” a statement read. “The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”
United managed to hold on for a draw and a share of the spoils, keeping them one point behind Everton in 15th.
