Aitana Bonmati out for five months after surgery on broken leg
Barcelona have confirmed that Aitana Bonmati will be out of action for the next five months after undergoing surgery on a fractured fibula.
The three-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered the injury after falling badly during training with the Spain international team.
Medical tests carried out shortly after the injury confirmed the grim diagnosis, ending any possibility of her featuring in Tuesday’s decisive match against Germany in Madrid.
Bonmatí returned to Barcelona on Monday and underwent surgery on Tuesday morning at the Hospital de Barcelona. In a statement, the Catalan club said the procedure, led by Dr Antoni Dalmau with the supervision of the club’s medical team, had been a success.
Here’s the club’s official statement:
“First-team player Aitana Bonmatí has undergone successful surgery for the transdesmal fracture of her left fibula. This surgery was performed by Dr. Antoni Dalmau at the Hospital de Barcelona, under the supervision of the Club’s Medical Services. The expected recovery time will be around five months.”
The news means that Aitana’s not due back until early May 2026 in what is a huge blow to Barcelona and the Spainish national team.
