FIFA Set to Compensate Newcastle Over Star’s World Cup Injury

Newcastle United could receive an injury compensation package for Tino Livramento after the right-back withdrew from England’s World Cup squad.

Livramento was named among England’s squad for the tournament but had to withdraw after sustaining a calf injury in training on the eve of the opening group stage match against Croatia.

The Newcastle defender was replaced by Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah in the squad as England secured an impressive 4-2 win in their group stage opener.

Newcastle are now expected to receive compensation from FIFA as they received when Yoane Wissa got injured while on international duty with DR Congo.

An injury absence of four or five weeks, even during the summer, could see Newcastle entitled to compensation should they apply to FIFA as part of the Club Protection Programme (CPP).

The CPP covers clubs that have had players injured on international duty and subsequently ruled out for at least 28 days. Should Livramento miss the start of pre-season as a result of being ruled out for at least four weeks, Newcastle will be entitled to a compensation fee from FIFA.

FIFA guidance states the CPP covers clubs for a maximum of €7.5million (around £6.5million) per player, per accident and is payable for a maximum of 365 days.

The compensation will stop once the player is no longer suffering from a ‘temporary total disablement’ from playing.

Newcastle will also receive a small fee for Livramento as part of the FIFA Club Benfits Programme, which pays clubs a reported fee of £8,200 per player for every day they are away at the World Cup.
