Super Eagles Legend Mikel Obi Eyes Future Role Beyond the Pitch

John Obi Mikel, the iconic midfielder who captained the Nigerian national team to AFCON glory in 2013, has hinted at a potential future role beyond playing for the Super Eagles. In a recent interview with Darren Lewis of CNN, Mikel expressed his desire to remain involved with the team, even after he hangs up his boots.

“I’d love to be involved with the Nigeria National Team and I would love to be a mediator between the hierarchy and the players,” Mikel stated. This comment sparked immediate intrigue among Nigerian football fans, who have long admired Mikel’s leadership qualities and dedication to the national team.

Mikel’s vast experience, both on and off the field, makes him uniquely qualified for such a role. He has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Chelsea and Middlesbrough, and has amassed over 80 appearances for the Super Eagles. Additionally, Mikel is known for his calm demeanor and ability to build bridges, qualities that would be invaluable in bridging the gap between players and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

So, what exactly could Mikel’s future role with the Super Eagles look like? Some possibilities include:

  • Technical Director: Mikel’s understanding of the game and his connections within the football world could make him a valuable asset in player recruitment and development.
  • Team Liaison Officer: Mikel could act as a bridge between the players and the NFF, ensuring that both parties are heard and understood.
  • Youth Development Coach: Mikel’s experience and leadership could be instrumental in nurturing the next generation of Nigerian football talent.

Of course, On 27 September 2022, Mikel announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35. However, his recent comments suggest that he is already laying the groundwork for a future beyond playing.

STOKE ON TRENT, ENGLAND – JANUARY 02: Lewis Cook of Bournemouth slides in to stop Mikel John Obi of Stoke City during the Sky Bet Championship match between Stoke City and AFC Bournemouth at Bet365 Stadium on January 02, 2021 in Stoke on Trent, England.

One thing is clear: Mikel Obi’s impact on Nigerian football extends far beyond his playing career. He is a national hero, a role model, and a leader who continues to inspire generations of young Nigerians. His future involvement with the Super Eagles, in whatever capacity, would be a welcome addition and could prove invaluable in helping the team achieve even greater success in the years to come.

It will be fascinating to see how Mikel’s future with the Super Eagles unfolds. Whether he takes on a formal role within the organization or simply remains a  supporter from the sidelines, there is no doubt that his passion for Nigerian football will continue to burn brightly. The Super Eagles, and Nigerian football as a whole, are all the better for it.
